Julie Su, ex officio

Julie Su is the Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice. She was appointed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani on January 1, 2026. Deputy Mayor Su oversees such agencies as the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection and the Taxi & Limousine Commission to ensure fair wages and other worker protections as well as the Department of Cultural Affairs. As a former Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor, Deputy Mayor Su played a central role in fighting for workers, ensuring a just day’s pay for a hard day’s work, and saving the pensions of more than a million union workers and retirees. Prior to her nomination to serve as U.S. Secretary of Labor, she served as the Deputy Secretary and before that as the California Labor Secretary appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom. Deputy Mayor Su brought a wealth of experience as a nonprofit attorney representing low wage, vulnerable workers for nearly two decades prior to being appointed to government positions. As California Labor Commissioner from 2011-2018, she was widely credited with a renaissance in enforcement and creative approaches to combating wage theft and protecting immigrant workers. Deputy Mayor Su graduated from Stanford University and Harvard Law School. She speaks Mandarin and Spanish.
